Arnold Messing has been involved with Fencing for over 60 years. He began learning about fencing in Junior High School in Brooklyn and never stopped. It became the love of his life.
His long competitive career began at CCNY as a member of the Varsity Fencing team. Under the guidance of Coach Ed Lucia, he was an All-American epee fencer his senior year. He continued fencing competitively after graduation and joined the NYTV. Coached by Maestro Odon Niderkirchner, he was both a Pan American team member and a Maccabiah Games member over his long career. His culmination was winning the World Championship in the Vet 70 epee division at the ripe old age of 71.
Over the years,Arniehas contributed to the fencing community by being involved in his Alma Mater and volunteering as an assistant coach. He has also been Head Coach at CCNY and Yeshiva University. He was a founding member of the USA Fencing Hall of Fame committee and due to his efforts, he was able to induct many deserving fencers into the Hall of Fame, including Jamie Melcher among many others.
Arniehas been a member of the Fencers Club for 30 years. Over this period, he has helped many new up and coming fencers with his advice, knowledge and humor.
When not fencing, Arnie worked as a social worker for New York iIty and the Visiting Nurse Service. During his active years, he helped many people who are homebound to live a better life.
It is fair to sayArnie's love for fencing and all that is involved is the joy of his life. Helping people is also the joy of his life. We wish him many more years of active participation with the Fencers Club.
